AYURVEDA

“Health is our true wealth” - The Ayurvedic Institute UK

Ayurveda in Sanskrit means science of life and is a traditional natural healing system of medicine originating in India more than 5000 years ago . It is one of the oldest health care systems in the world.

Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention and encourages the maintenance of health through close attention to balance in one’s life. The aims and objectives of this science are to maintain the health of a healthy person and to heal the disease of an unhealthy person. Both prevention and healing can be carried out by entirely natural means. Ayurveda is a holistic system of healing in the truest sense. As a science of self healing, Ayurveda encompasses diet and nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, rest and relaxation, meditation, breathing exercises, and medicinal herbs, along with cleansing and rejuvenation programs for healing body, mind and spirit.

Just as everyone has a unique finger print, each person has a particular pattern of energy known as our Prakruti (constitution). Many factors throughout life disturb this balance including diet, stress, emotional state, insufficient and excessive exercise and rest, weather, environment, traumas etc leading to alterations in the body’s inner ecology ultimately leading to disease. Ayurveda is not a passive form of therapy but rather asks each individual to take responsibility for his or her own daily living.

Ayurveda seeks to find the root cause of any imbalance and prescribes different regimes for each individual to restore balance. In this way it treats the whole person and not just the presenting symptoms.

My journey with Ayurveda started with my own chronic psoriatic skin condition. I knew deep within that my condition was an internal imbalance and went in search for the answers. For more on my journey and photos scroll down below.

RESTORING BALANCE

Testimonials

“I had been suffering from chronic pain in my body for around 2 years which was progressively getting worse. I also had what I can only describe as chronic fatigue, I was so exhausted by the afternoon that I was having to sleep and I was also struggling to come off antidepressants. I had tried everything, had blood tests and was facing the possibility of trying HRT for early menopause symptoms. I had tried various diets and exercise but nothing was working and I had terrible brain fog, which made every day a struggle. I just felt I was functioning at my lowest level. I decided I had nothing to loose with trying Ayurveda and had a consultation of around an hour with Susan and she sent me over a diet plan and a recommendation of herbs to take.

The first couple of days I felt a little overwhelmed but soon got into a routine of taking the herbs and made the adjustments to my diet which Susan had recommended. Within a week the pain in my body was greatly reduced and I was able to get out of bed in the morning, when I woke, with a clearer head and just by sitting up, instead of having to edge myself into a comfortable position. Within 3 weeks I was completely off antidepressants and able to run around with my children and focus on what I needed to, right through the day with no energy slumps! I had been advised by susan only to take gentle exercises for the first 3 weeks which I did, now almost 5 weeks in I am regular swimming in the sea, cycling and practicing yoga and still have the energy to be the mum I want to be and get stuff done.

I am completely converted to this way of life and so astonished and grateful it has worked. I don't fully understand it but I don't need to as Susan is there every step of the way giving advice on any question I have and supporting me. The changes are not so drastic that they are daunting, there are times when I eat the odd thing that I am advised to stay away from or miss taking some herbs but because the foundation has been laid I know that there is no real damage done and I feel so good on plan that I want to stay on it. I would recommend Ayurveda to anyone, in fact I do because my friends and family have seen the difference in me and are interested in what's changed. I feel lighter in body and mind and am looking forward to what I can achieve in the future. I feel myself.” C

MY JOURNEY

My first break out of psoriasis happened in 2014, the year my mum was diagnosed with cancer. I knew that there was a link between the condition and the stress i was under at the time. On visiting my doctor I was prescribed the usual steroid creams and light therapy treatments. I went down that road and over a period of a year with regular light therapy the condition, on the surface, final cleared.

in 2018, a year after the birth of my daughter, I started to see patches reappear. Again it was an incredibly stressful time trying to manage baby, house and business. My energy was low and I was drinking several cups of coffee a day to keep me going as well as diet of toast for breakfast lunch and dinner! Whatever was quick and easy. My condition progressively got worse over the following year until i was pretty much covered in patches. In June 2019 I signed for the Ayurvedic Nutrition and Lifestyle Course. In November I had my first consultation with a doctor of the Clinic who gave me advice on diet and lifestyle and prescribed herbs, oil and cream to use with appointments every 3 weeks to follow up.

Within 3 weeks I saw a noticeable difference. Over the Christmas period my condition regressed slightly as I was being a bit naughty with all the festive treats! By March 2020 my skin was 99% clear.

As we moved into lockdown in march 2020 with the stress of having to move my classes online, recording classes several times a day 7 days a week and not being able to nip to the shop to buy food that was suitable for my diet my skin once again regressed. Now in July, back on the diet with a much less active lifestyle my skin is once again on the road to recovery.

Ayurveda is not a passive form of therapy but rather asks each individual to take responsibility for his or her own daily living. Over time, creating small changes each day, a new path is formed, one that leads to healthier decision making in support of balance . Health is our true wealth !!
